Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder?

The name doesn’t matter – it is a devastating illness and one that is very difficult to live with. The sufferer, their friends and family will need help. “Double Trouble.. Living with manic depression”, is a personal story of one woman’s battle, over 17 years, to do just that. It is also a practical guide and gives a valuable insight into how to accept and live alongside manic depression. It is a true story but one which offers hope and inspiration to others. The author also gives some talks to help alleviate the stigma of mental illness.

About the Author

Pauline Rhodes (nee Rew) was born in Old Stevenage in 1960. She has lived in Hertfordshire all her life and was educated at St Nicholas School and The Barclay School in Stevenage.

Her writing career began at the age of 19, when she was indentured to the Countryside Magazine Group, under the expert tuition of Eric Scott.

Her formal apprenticeship was sponsored by the NUJ and she served three and a half years of rigorous training in writing and magazine editing. She attended the London College of Printing on a sandwich course and was probably the last person to successfully complete their Periodical Journalism course (because such sponsorship was already out of fashion).

In 1983 she left to work in London as Production Editor on Creative Cook, a weekly cookery part-work, launched nationally in September. At the end of this contract, in 1984, she moved into public relations with Peter Carrick Associates in Hertfordshire. She married in 1985 and set up her own freelance editorial consultancy in 1988.

In 1989 her work was accepted by the British Association of Industrial Editors (now the British Association of Communicators in Business) and she became an associate member. Her freelance editing included a monthly Business Magazine; a book on a CBI Conference; a full-colour newspaper for the Van Hage Garden Company and writing various articles for the Licensee Magazine.

In December 1989 she gave birth to twins and this was the onset of her “Double Trouble” and where this personal story begins.

What others are saying..

About “Double Trouble..
Living with manic depression”

“I believe this book is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit through the dark and hellish days of depressive illness. It is a very personal story with which other sufferers with mental health problems can empathise and identify. The writing is clear and purposeful but very user friendly and easy to read. It is an honest and uncompromising account yet in her take Pauline shows humour, warmth and sensitivity. Everyone who works in the mental health sector should read this book and try to understand what it is like to be in “the pit”. In my own experience of mental illness, I have found many professionals to be tremendously supportive and helpful. However, some experts seem to regard this illness as a weakness and think that all one has to do is “go and look at nature”, as I was once told! I congratulate Pauline for verbalising that which many of us cannot put into words.”

Sue Hills MIND Service User

"As one who has encountered severe depression in my personal and professional life, I recognised at once an authentic voice on the subject. Pauline tells it as it is with searing honesty in a way that I believe will resonate with those who are currently struggling. Hers is essentially a voice of resilience and hope."
